Hel

Hel, queen of the afterlife realm. Part three of the Norse commission.

Finished painting 20/04/24

According to Norse mythology, Hel is the Queen of Helheim the afterlife realm. She is often depicted being one half living and the other half undead. I consulted with the client regularly in case they had a good idea what she should look like and I deviated too far from their expectations. Her hair for instance is often portrayed as one side black and the other white but sometimes the white is on the living side and sometimes on the dead. The client preferred white on the dead side. Its this sort of little detail that can really help make the mini meet the expectations of the customer.

Although this was the smallest of the three commissioned works it wasn’t without its challenges. The blood spell effect for example was a separate part with no definite fixing point to the model. I decided to drill both parts and pin them together in addition to the use of superglue. I am confident that it is now secured in place properly. I felt the use of layering was appropriate for a lot of this project but it is a technique I shy away from. I am happy with the result and glad of the practice!

That’s the end of the three piece commission. It was a lot of fun!
